Scene: I walk into the elevator, joining two women from my office. They have clearly been engaged in dialog as they walked through the halls...I step in and immediately stare up at the floor numbers.
Blonde lady: My day starts at 6:00 when I get two kids ready for school. I get them ready, and then I get ready to take them to school and come to work. (annoyed tone)
Black haired lady just listens. I continue to stare at the numbers.
Blonde lady: And my day ends around 7:30 after they go to bed. (PAUSE) Unless I have to go to the store for something. (PAUSE) And then I have to pay the bills. And keep the house. (PAUSE)
Black haired lady just continues to listen. I continue to stare at the numbers and think to myself "I hear ya sister. And isn't it a pisser."
Scene ends as I walk off the elevator and wonder what prompted this conversation and whether or not the poor black haired lady even cared about this blonde lady's plight.
But as I walked away- I thought to myself...It really is amazing what women do in this day and age. What would the world be like without us? I am sure I sound like a feminist right now- but who cares- I'm impressed with the women around me. And the women around me even have good, loving, contributing husbands. And yet, I am amazed by the things we pull off in a day...the way we contribute to the world on so many levels. The way I truly believe the world would just stop if there came a day without a woman. And I mean beyond the fact that obviously procreating would be a challenge...I mean that like the movie "A Day Without a Mexican" our society would crumble without women...and much faster than without men if we're honest.
I love men. I love my husband. I love Matt Damon. I love John Irving. But the truth is- a day without a woman is a pretty bleak picture. Which brings me full circle to a quote I have believed to be true for years...behind every strong man is a stronger woman.
Hoorah ladies. Hoorah.

"hoorah ladies, hoorah" is right!
ReplyDeleteas a new aunt, i am marveling over all that women do as wives, mothers, lovers and employees - so many roles. yes men wear multiple hats, too and yes, team work is always best but worldwide, i agree a day without a woman would be seriously, seriously bleak.
i think this article goes a bit too far in stating how far women have come, but it's an interesting read on how women's strengths are more and more desirable in the workplace and why. things you'll know already, eloise, being a career maven yourself, but here is it just for fun...
